Founders Jan and Mitsuko Shrem, avid art collectors realized their dream with the opening of this marvel in 1987. “Wine is an art form that should delight, illuminate and surprise,” says Jan. Indeed a brief visit to the winery and a tasting of the wines in March lead us to believe this is truly living life in full colour, taking advantage of every one of our five senses!
We had the opportunity to speak with Brit Van Geisen, calling in to our radio show on CP24 Radio 1050 very early one Saturday morning . Mr. Geisen is the Director of Hospitality for Clos Pegase. “Why the name Clos Pegase? ” we asked. “The name alludes to the Greek myth which tells us that the winged horse, Pegasus, unleashed the sacred Spring of the Muses, bringing life to the vines and inspiration to the poets” Brit tells us. He goes on to explain “The Pegasus inspired owners Jan and Mitsuko to put together their impressive collection of 20th century paintings, sculpture and wine-related art and antiquities spanning 4,000 years; all available to enjoy at the winery”. We strolled around the grounds, taking in the various sculptures, one of which “La Pouce” was a favorite, eliciting a sense of awe, humor and wonderment.
“Brit”, we asked “how would you describe the wines of Clos Pegase?” “It’s about balance, harmony and symmetry” he enthuses “about true varietal character and balance” The winery grows, vinifys and bottles all of the wine produced. which is rare. With 450 acres of vines planted, this is an Estate Winery that is a must see. and experience!
