Nicholas Malcolm, STREET LIFE, Rumi Galleries Exhibit, Oct 1st-15th

For three years Nicholas Malcolm has picked, pulled and cut paper off poles, plywood fencing and unused buildings on Queen Street, almost all of which has come from University to Roncesvalles. Nicholas believes that Queen Street long ago became the most vibrant street in Toronto and that the feel of the street is constantly evolving. He is fascinated with the ever changing collage of advertisements and personal anecdotes that appear at random, without any money changing hands. It is an open forum of expression. Anyone, from individuals to major corporations, can use street poles, plywood fencing and unused buildings to try and make their point. It is, in a real sense, anarchistic. Text and images are constantly being layered, one on top of the other. The competition for space is fierce. The result is a series of “living walls” of expression that are in continuous flux. In STREET LIFE Nicholas has captured this anarchistic form of expression through his own “living walls” that have been frozen in time.

The exhibit is up at Rumi Galleries from Oct 1st- 15th, 2011. Simply fascinating. Go check it out. Don’t forget The Wine Ladies Holiday Mix n Mingle will be taking place Nov 17th, 2011 at Rumi Galleries. For more information and tickets Click Here. We invite you to watch the video invite here:

Collingwood Canadian Whisky, first new major whisky in 10 years.

Collingwood Whisky, a new Canadian spirit hit the store shelves this month. Collingwood will be the only maple wood mellowed Canadian whisky available on the market. The whisky is triple distilled and then matured in white oak barrels. It’s finished by mellowing the blended whisky with toasted Maplewood, which adds sweetness to the spirit while reducing natural astringency. Collingwood, which sports an interesting men’s cologne shaped bottle is now available at the LCBO (#244186). Each bottle clocks in at 80 proof, and a 750ml bottle will retail for around $29.95. Collingwood delivers a refined flavour profile that can be enjoyed on the rocks or mixed in a cocktail. Check out 3 awesome cocktail ideas here: Awesome new Canadian whisky made from the finest Canadian grains, pure spring water from Ontario’s Georgian Bay. Smooth, hand-crafted, maple wood mellowed.

Desert Cliffs Hiking Spa

The day of great anticipation has finally arrived. We are Utah bound, to the glorious red mountains, stunning canyons, incredible sand dunes and the most extraordinary hiking one can imagine. Specializing in breathtaking hikes, a range of first class fitness classes, fabulous healthy food and an environment of beauty and calm.

Whats the skinny on the skinny white jeans? Every girl has a pair she needs to get back into and these are Susanne's. The plan is to leave www.DesertCliffs.com wearing them — with John Kemp

Chateauneuf du “Tap” will be our beverage of choice while here in the desert.

Yes, we’ve put away our signature over sized wine glasses and replaced them with extreme backpacks, complete with 2 liter water bladders, special pockets for our cameras and of course lots of sun block! We arrive late Sunday afternoon and are welcomed to Desert Cliffs, by the very friendly and fit John Kemp, the proprietor of this fabulous resort. A “boutique” fitness resort if you will, with room for a maximum of only fourteen guests, all housed in a beautiful 7,000 square foot home. Personalized attention for each of the guests is what Desert Cliffs is all about. All the amenities are provided including two in-house chefs ready to cater to your personal needs.

After the introductions and a little lively and engaging chatter, John gives us a brief tour, an orientation to the program and shows us our room, spacious and bright, we love it. “If you can come back down in about an hour,” he says “we can get started right away and do your weigh-ins and measurements” Yikes, already” we exclaim “we just got off the plane, we’re all bloated, maybe we should do it in the morning”. Within the hour we find ourselves filling out a questionnaire, being measured and standing on a NASA looking machine, a scale that tells you much more than the number of pounds you have to lose! “Sometimes less is more John”, we say, but not to worry based on the program we are about to embark on including the level of personal attention, the challenging hikes and more, we are confident our goals will be met, and Susanne will fit once again into her white skinny jeans! Let the adventure begin!

Day 2: Kanarraville, a hike of splendour and adventure. Incredible waterfalls, climbing ladders up to new heights. No worries about the hiking boots, got to rough it sometimes. Steep climbing meaning you got to come down, had to go down on the behind in a couple of spots. How unsophisticated is that!

Canyon slots with the walls stretching over 100 feet high into the brilliant blue sky, down in the canyon , protected from the sun, we relish the coolness, and take in the magnificence of this geological wonder, A glistening fresh, rapid water fall, rushes over a man made wooden, somewhat unbalanced ladder, we are to ascend. the water is Freezing, Georgia takes the plunge and starts the climb, in a moment, legs feeling numb…. No one else is coming! She turns back, soaking, and a little more than refreshed.

Burning Kiln Winery hailing from the East… Burning Kiln Winery, in a word, spells adventure! A unique and delectable adventure for the palate, adopting and adapting slightly, the ancient “appassimento” method in winemaking. The technique of drying the grapes on mats or slated crates is utilized at Burning Kiln, however, modified slightly with a twist. The land on which the vineyards are planted was formerly used to farm tobacco, and the tobacco drying kilns of the past are now being used to dry the grapes. Award winning winemaker Andrzej Lipinski formerly of several high profile, winning wineries including Legends, Megalomaniac, Foreign Affair and Organized Crime has this to say “This method helps to accentuate the sugars, boost the acids and balance the tannins allowing for a deeper coloured and fuller flavoured wine to be produced”. Indeed, when you sample the wines of Burning Kiln your palate will concur! A range of wonderful wines include their Cure man’s Chardonnay, an intense Pinot Noir dominated by pure black cherry with hints of spice, a blended wine of Merlot and Cabernet Franc called Strip Room as well as a dessert wine, Chen in Blanc just to name a few. We are thrilled that Burning Kiln is our feature winery for Ontario and look forward to experiencing the above four wines, paired with the dishes masterfully created by Chef Land Hoang of 3 S’s. Congratulations to the partners of Burning Kiln, with its first release in 2010, there’s already a buzz about the wines and its promising future. The team of owners represents a collection of individuals, each with their own strengths and passion, the combined skills, talents and ambitions required to make Burning Kiln Winery a success are there in abundance! We mentioned “adventure” for the palate but there is more. Within walking distance from the winery is a completely unique ultra-luxurious eco-resort experience. Another kind of adventure, not for the faint of heart, a true thrill, loads of fun and a must for the active soul! New this summer zip lining, imagine gliding through the forest on a world class zip line canopy tour that includes 8 zip lines, 2 suspension bridges and a 40 foot rappel! Return to the tasting room, enjoy a glass of first class wine, I’ll take a Pinot Noir, light lunch of local delectable’s and relish your sense of adventure! We’re booking our Burning Kiln visit soon, wine tasting and zip lining…anyone want to join us? From The West… Jak Meyer of Meyer Family Vineyards After 3 long years of searching Jak Meyer, Meyer Family Vineyards finally found the perfect vineyard site in the Okanagan Valley. In 2006 he and his wife Janice bought a small 1.62 hectare vineyard on the coveted Naramata bench, and in 2009 a 6.9 hectare property in Okanagan Falls. The Meyer’s focus is Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, producing less than 3000 cases from mature 14 year old vines. Having fun and making excellent wines is the family philosophy and Jak was only too happy to oblige and agree to be our West Coast winemaker for our friendly battle of the wines event East Meets West on September 22nd. Jak is up to the challenge and we can’t wait to taste his award winning wines paired to perfection with our host restaurant Seafood, Steak and Song, 3 S’s Restaurant in beautiful downtown Oakville.
