Discover the wonderful wines of Portugal this month that have many experts and wine connoisseurs around the world applauding their diversity, their quality and terrific value. With a month long promotion kicking off at the LCBO later this month (March 29th-April 25th) there will be plenty of opportunities to sample many of these fabulous wines.
We were joined in studio by William Delgado from the Portuguese Trade and Tourism Commission as well as Marcio Ferreira, North American Marketing Manager of ViniPortugal (one word), here all the way from Portugal to help spread the word, that is quickly spreading like wild fire; Portuguese wines are commanding attention, winning awards and are being touted around the world by wine connoisseurs and wine experts as some of the best value wines out there. Diverse and delicious! Adoption of the latest wine making techniques and most modern facilities in Portugal have gone a long way in affording this small, yet heavily planted wine growing country the ability to showcase its potential to produce incredible wines of superb value and individuality.
Marcio Ferreira is passionate about Portugal and her wines. This small country no more than 600 kilometers long and 200 kilometers wide boasts an array of native grape varieties planted in almost every region. Only the highest peaks of the central and northern mountain ranges are not suitable for viticulture. A huge diversity of climatic conditions across the country allow for a variety of style of wines to be produced and enjoyed.

We too were taken with the allure of many of Portugal’s indigenous wines such as the full bodied, deep colored, powerful, spicy and concentrated red Touriga Nacional (name of the grape) which is now being vinified in a more approachable style. Be sure to be on the alert for in-store LCBO tastings going on throughout the promotion. And this is just the beginning, as numerous other delectable and fascinating varietals will also be show cased. Be sure not to miss out! We’ll continue to explore the wines of Portugal on our radio show, with each Saturday, for the next 5 weeks bringing you a new opportunity to learn just a little more about this fascinating wine growing region, with winemakers, and chefs joining us for a brief call-in.
