Bodega Catena Malbec 2012, Susanne’s Wine Pick.

Bodega Catena Malbec 2012
My wine pick this week is from South America, although not from Chile but from Argentina. Another region making superb quality, value wines and this one is a standout!

Susanne’s Wine Pick
The producer, family owned Bodega Catena Zapata, is known for their high quality wines. It has been making wine for multiple generations. They have vineyards planted in Mendoza at varying altitudes each vineyard bringing something unique to the final blends.
My pick the Bodega Catena Malbec 2012 is a blend of grapes from four vineyard sites. Each bringing something special to the wine. The result a wine of intense aroma, with black fruit, floral notes, spice, black pepper, complex and with a lasting finish. I thought delish for $19.95.

181 Merlot Lodi by Delicate Vineyards, Georgia’s Wine Pick

181 Merlot Lodi by Delicate Vineyards
Well seeing as we’re going to be starting off today’s radio show with a wine film that took place in California. I was feeling a little badly about the lowly regarded grape Merlot in our first film today (Sideways). Therefor, I picked a California Merlot. Now I must confess I don’t usually gravitate automatically to Merlot, but I did come across one this week that I really liked. It’s owned by Delicato Vineyards in the Lodi appellation of California.
181 Merlot Lodi by Delicate Vineyards
And their tag line is “Not all vines are created equal”. The 181 refers to the vine stock which is “the most coveted vine stock in Bordeaux. So how did I like it? I truly did. It was rich and elegant. It had ripe fruity plum and cherry notes, hints of spice and great finish.Great Merlot buy for $16.95
And so although the grape was dumped on in the hit movie Sideways by Miles, we say don’t be such a snob Miles,, pick a bottle up tonight for TIFF!

What are some of the reasons for cooking with wine? Ask The Wine Ladies.

Cooking with wine
Dear Wine Ladies,
I am a culinary student and am part of a group project that is looking at cooking with alcohol. What are some of the reasons for cooking with wine, what does it do to the food and does the acidity in wine play a role?

Dear Cynthia,
A splash of wine or definitely a cup or two depending on the recipe can definitely add another dimension to the gastronomic experience. Cooking with wine adds extra flavour; it acts like a turbo booster, just as garlic, salt, pepper and even lemon does. It can also add extra body, complexity and texture. It is great for adding acidity to rich dishes, can serve to tenderize and impair flavour as well. A few hints we’ve garnered over the years from award winning chefs include;
1. Make sure you let the wine cook off before adding another liquid such as stock. If you add them together the result will have an “uncooked wine” flavour.
2. Reserve the better wines for the finishing off of a dish when the flavour will be more present, for dishes that require longer cooking time such as braising, a lesser wine will be fine.
3. For a winning combination using our iconic icewine try this recipe we found “Vineyard Leg of Lamb with Icewine Fig Compote. It can befound in the book Icewine, by Donald Ziraldo and Karl Kaiser, foundersof the beautiful, award winning winery Inniskillin.
4. To “save” a dish in which you’ve used too much wine, re-establish balance by adding more butter or olive oil.

Can you tell us a little about Spanish wines? Ask The Wine Ladies as heard on ConnectMeRadio.com
Dear Wine Ladies,
Over the last little while it seems that Spanish wines seem to be popping up at various dinner parties and get-together’s more and more. We really enjoyed one of our most recent white wine discoveries called Viura (we think). Which we were told was a Spanish wine that cost less than $15.00. Neither my boyfriend or I can remember where it came from in Spain. We were wondering if this is the name of an area, a brand name or a town. Any additional info on this wine would be appreciated.
Barbara
Barrie, Ontario
Dear Barbara,
To be sure it seems that the wines of Spain have been enjoying an increase in popularity over the last little while. The wine you are asking about is actually the name of an historic grape variety. It is the most planted white grape in the legendary red wine region of Rioja in the north-east. It is also widely planted in other areas of the north-east of Spain where it goes by the name Macabeo. And in Roussillon in southern France where it is known as Macabeu.
Typically Viura can be made as a single varietal wine or blended with other grapes (as in Rioja where regulations now permit international varieties such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc to be used up to 49% of the blend). It is a varietal that presents its challenges in the vineyards but more and more producers in the area are getting serious about Viura and willing to take the necessary steps, some quite costly to get the best out of the grape. The plantings in Rioja are quite old, many going back up to 45 years which allows for greater complexity in the final product in the hands of a good viticulturist and winemaker. Well balanced, lively crisp wines with alluring aromas of apple, lemon and sometimes hint of honey can be found, and are delicious to be sure. Perhaps you recently tasted the Beronia 2012 Viura which was available in Ontario for $14.95, a great buy to be sure.

Johnny V, our “Go to Kitchen guy” of Kitchen Designers Plus. Sprucing things up for the holidays.
With the holidays around the corner, if you’re expecting family and friends to soon be on your door step, you may be thinking, as we are “I wish I hadn’t postponed my much needed kitchen reno, everything looks “so tired”. Here’s a tip we got from our “go to kitchen guy” Johnny V of KDP, that we’re going to take advantage of for sure.
If a huge chunk of your entertaining takes place in the kitchen, sprucing up the major surfaces is going to make all the difference! Starting with the floors, an expansive marble floor, once pristine and gorgeous maybe now suffering from a little grimy grout! We can vouch for that!
The dog, food and wine stains and simply grime due to high traffic has taken the luster out of the flooring. The answer, rinse the floor, priming it, then get a stiff brush to loosen stubborn stains and the dirt, a little elbow grease works wonders! Hit the cabinetry next, tighten any hinges and wipe down the cabinets thoroughly, finally give the back splash and counter tops a little loving care and presto, a little reno magic! Cheers everyone, Johnny ‘V’

Cuvee Award of Excellence for Viticulture goes to Kevin Donohue, Colio Estate Wines
Cuvee Award of Excellence for Viticulture goes to Kevin Donohue, Colio Estate Wines.

Kevin Donohue
Congrats to Kevin Donohue of Colio Estate Wines for his Cuvee Award of Excellence for Viticulture. The Cuvee Awards are the industry’s Oscars. It was deserved recognition for a lifetime of study and passion in a discipline that is away from the limelight, but centre stage in terms of its critical importance to the wine industry.
Among Kevin’s many roles, he tends the 200 acres of planted vineyards in the company’s vineyards in Colchester. The parcel of 20 acres they own on the Parkway in Niagara-on-the-Lake. One might think that his job gets easier in the off-season when vineyard activity has slowed to a crawl. But, if this winter is any indication, chances are on any given intensely cold night, Kevin will be up all night studying satellite images for temperature and humidity issues to determine whether the vineyard’s eight wind machines will need to be started up.
Cheers to Kevin of Colio Estates!

UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre enjoys a glass of red wine. Pinot Noir anyone?

Georges St-Pierre
Having discovered that MMA Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre loves red wine we knew that we just had to meet with him.
Our opportunity arose when we were invited to meet GSP recently at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts for the Canadian premiere of “The Striking Truth:” This documentary is based on the juxtaposing careers of charismatic and humble current Welterweight Campion of the UFC, Georges St-Pierre and the dynamic MMA fighter David “The Crow” Loiseau.
This red-carpet evening also included a live and interactive one on one question and answer period with Rogers Sportsnet Joe “Showdown” Ferraro host of MMA Connected and main cast members of the film, Welterweight Champion of UFC Georges St-Pierre: David Loiseau MMA Fighter: and director/producer of the documentary Steven J.Wong: from Steven J. Wong Films.
We also had a chance to chat with “Kenny Cabernet”, world renowned enologist and international wine consultant who explained the health benefits of red wine, and why Pinot Noir is one of the healthiest grapes packing the biggest antioxidant punch, which by the way is GSP’s favourite wine! The Wine Ladies TV, “One Sip At A Time” was there to capture it all.
