On this week’s showDrink New Zealand and think the “King of Sauvignon Blanc”,sustainability and the meteoric rise in popularity!

Episode 21

We explore a youthful wine region that has enjoyed a meteoric rise in popularity.  It is recognized the world over for its commitment to the environment and sustainability. Widely recognized as the “King of Sauvignon Blanc” which has become synonymous with this region, and has recently been awarded its very own Pinot Noir glass for one of its regions by the preeminent 11th generation Austrian glass maker Riedel. We can only be talking about one country and that is New Zealand!

To start things off .. If there’s anyone in Canada that is truly passionate about the wines of New Zealand, and instrumental in the meteoric rise in popularity of these wines it is our first guest, who is Robert Ketchin, the Market Manager for New Zealand Winegrowers Canada for over twenty years.

Listen to Robert Ketchin at 5:53 minutes into the show.

Great fun at the International Sauvignon Blanc Day April 24th enjoying 18 Sauvignon Blanc wines with 4 delicious types of oysters at Johnson and Sons Oyster House in Toronto. Celebrations started in New Zealand and continued as they traversed the various time zones around the globe ending in San Francisco,Twitter headquarters. #SauvBlancDay

Our first kiwi caller as they are affectionately known as … Jim Robertson and Jim will share with us a little about the brief history of this youthful region, the role Brancott Estate winery played at the time as well as the significance of New Zealand’s signature grape Sauvignon Blanc.
Listen to Jim Robertson at 21:35 minutes into the show.

A few tips on wine and chocolate tasting.

For planning your Valentine’s Day date, think about offering a range of chocolates, maybe five or six, with a varying degree of cacao content resulting in different levels of sweetness and pure chocolate strength. Consider too, chocolates that contain nuts or toffee, opening up additional possibilities. Next select a range of wines, keeping in mind that in general sweeter wines such as icewines, sherry, tawny port or a Banyuls from France pair really well with chocolate. Throw in a fruity Zinfandel too for a different experience! don’t forget, it’s all about personal taste! Many sommeliers and experts love the pairing of dry Cabernets or fruity wines with dark chocolate while others opt for the classic, and romantic chocolate dipped strawberries and Champagne.

Consider BRIX Chocolate.

Another option, making life simple and taking out the guesswork would be to consider the absolutely delicious chocolate on the market called BRIX; the first ever to be crafted specifically to pair with wine. After much trial and error, the founder Dr. Proia an Ohio pulmonologist (who appreciated the antioxidants found in both wine and chocolate) developed three blends of chocolate with their root being of single origin Ghanaian chocolate known for their red fruit tones particularly suited to wine.

A few chocolate tasting tips that we’ve picked up over time include the advice of chocolatiers and connoisseurs to not bite into the chocolate, but rather to allow the chocolate to slowly melt in your mouth maximizing the full range of flavors, texture and finish.

Sample the wine first on its own, and then sample the chocolate.

Next taste the wine again along with the chocolate in your mouth. Is the sum of the parts greater than the whole? Notice if certain flavors of either the wine or the chocolate are heightened or perhaps diminished? Share your taste experience and your thoughts with the others.
Be sure to provide your guests with several palate cleansers such as fresh bread, simple crackers and pitchers of water. A selection of fresh cheeses accompanied by fresh fruit would round out the evening beautifully!

Good Luck everyone!

Recently in Toronto celebrating The 10th anniversary of The Berlin Tasting with featured guest Eduardo Chadwick the President and Owner of Vina Errazuriz and co-founder of Mondavi of Sena.

The 10th anniversary of a ground breaking tasting that sent a little bit of tremor through our world of wine… it was called The Berlin Tasting. And boy did it ever make a statement and an impact in the perception of this country’s wine

And the country, a long and skinny one with wine regions that span from the north to the south, over 4000 kilometers. Is… ready for this.. Chile. Now at this historic tasting, these wines truly came out on top! Beating out some of the worlds iconic wines including established French classics such as Chateau Lafite, Chateau Margaux and and Italian cult wines including Sassicaia and Tignanello.

Today all the way from Chile, to share with us how this tasting went down that historic January day in 2004,  to the surprise of the panel of 36 international judges, no-one really expected this outcome… except possibly our guest… Eduardo Chadwick, the President and Owner of Vina Errazuriz and co-founder with Mondavi of Sena, who’s two wines won top honours! We’ll also explore with Mr. Chadwick how these wines are faring today and the long lasting impact this legendary tasting has had on the wines of Chile today.
And not only is Chile a premier  wine growing region, but the country itself is also  stunning with natural landscapes, dramatically varied from desert to forest, volcanoes, glaciers and beaches.. So much to do and see from the mysterious  and most isolated place in the world, Easter Island to the Atacama Desert, the highest and driest desert on earth, likened in places to the surface of Mars…to fill us in on some of the bucket list places to visit in Chile, we will be welcoming Juan Antonio Figueroa, the Trade Commissioner of Chile here in Toronto

Coming up on today’s show, we’ve got Rock Stars!

Of  the kitchen that is…. Celebrity chefs today are the new rock stars, with so many cooking shows on the air from Hells Kitchen, to Iron Chef and one of our faves, CHOPPED Canada our daily diet excuse the pun is consumed with celebrity chefs, their talent and the dishing out of critiques.

And speaking of critiques, we, The Wine Ladies have  been asked to be Celebrity Judges for Chef Wars, a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity whereby just like in the TV show CHOPPED Canada, two accomplished chefs, in this case, Chef Andrew Nelson of the Delta Meadowvale Hotel as well as Chef Terry Port, of Personal Chef Solutions will vie for THE winning TITLE creating a fabulous menu using secret ingredients.

And as celebrity judges, we thought we’d reach out for some advice and why not go to the best of the best!

Joining us on the show, Celebrity chef extraordinaire, television host, judge on CHOPPED Canada, cookbook author, and an award winning recording artist,Celebrity Chef Roger Mooking.

Also joining us Executive Chef JohnRoss Woodland, who traded in his hockey skates for chopping knives as he trained to become a professional chef that lead him to fame as a recent winner of CHOPPED Canada winning $10,000 in prize money, and as it happens Roger Mooking was one of the judges that helped make that happen!

We’ll be sure to get a lot of advice from these guys for not only ourselves being judges but also for our next guest Executive Chef Andrew Nelson of the Delta Meadowvale Hotel who is one of the two chefs competing at the CHEF WARS event! Andrew has quite a lineup of awards already attached to his name, so a formidable opponent he will be for sure.

All this excitement and competition will be to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity of Mississauga. Habitat offers a hand up, not a hand out and helps make homes a reality for families in need. Mark Jambrovic, Event Manager, joins us to share all of this with us. It’s going to be a great show.
