Well I find myself in the same camp as Miles did in Sideways. He adored Pinot Noir as so do I! As you know Pinot Noir is often referred to as the heart break grape, because its so hard to grow. Just like the womanizer Jack broke Stephanie’s heart (played by Sandra Oh) in the movie. This grape can be very fickle indeed and break a winemakers heart too.

My pick is the Hahn Winery Pinot Noir 2012. Hanh is a family owned winery out of Monterey. They’ve been making wine for over 30 years and have maintained their commitment to high quality and handcrafted wines. You can depend on Hahn!

This Pinot gives me what I like! It’s medium in body, wonderful aromas of strawberry, cherry and notes of spice. $18.95, a super buy

Episode #5.Wine and Film

On this week’s radio show…with the Toronto International Film Festival in full swing we thought we would have a look at some of the roles that wine has played in a variety of movies and the impact that these films have had on you the consumer! Take the movie Sideways for example, the sales of Pinot Noir skyrocketed and what happened to the sales of Merlot?

They tanked…. for awhile anyways! Well we’re going to find out why because joining us on the show is Frank Ostini, the owner of the Hitching Post II Restaurant, frequented by Miles and Jack in the film Sideways, now celebrating it’s 10th anniversary.

Also joining us, one of the most influential wine critics, journalists, authors, wine TV show hosts, Jancis Robinson about the film Red Obsession, the story of wine from Bordeaux to Bejing…. An incredible story.

Also, Kathryn Kates, proprietor of Kathyrn Kates Public Relations, journalist and song writer, Kathryn currently writes a column Celebrity Dinner Date, of which we were one, or a duo, we’ll chat with Kathryn about that as well as introduce you to singer and songwriter Daniel Casavant and their new single, “Walking From The Clouds”.

And finally the Founder of the Toronto International Film Festival and now founder of another festival The Niagara Integrated Film Festival, Bill Marshall with tons of stories.

Well seeing as we’re going to be starting off today’s radio show with a wine film that took place in California. I was feeling a little badly about the lowly regarded grape Merlot in our first film today (Sideways). Therefor, I picked a California Merlot. Now I must confess I don’t usually gravitate automatically to Merlot, but I did come across one this week that I really liked. It’s owned by Delicato Vineyards in the Lodi appellation of California.

And their tag line is “Not all vines are created equal”. The 181 refers to the vine stock which is “the most coveted vine stock in Bordeaux. So how did I like it? I truly did. It was rich and elegant. It had ripe fruity plum and cherry notes, hints of spice and great finish.Great Merlot buy for $16.95

And so although the grape was dumped on in the hit movie Sideways by Miles, we say don’t be such a snob Miles,, pick a bottle up tonight for TIFF!

I recently had a dinner party and one of my guests brought a surprise wine in a paper bag. We do this sometime and we call it our mystery wine game! Upon opening the bottle it had an immediate aroma that was very alluring and sensual with spicy notes on the nose, of green apple and white peach. On the palette,it exhibited good weight, beautiful bright acidity. This subtle old world chardonnay without heavy oak, reminded me of past wines I’ve tasted from the Montrachet family of wines. The average age of the vines is 20-30 years, the grapes are hand harvested and the wine is made with native yeast.  Loved it!

When one thinks of Mexico, often it’s about Tequila, in fact they also have a well established wine industry.Venture up to the north-western tip of Mexico to discover Baha California, with wines much like the ones sought after California’s wines with its costal region.I loved this wine wit my burger on the grill. Simply divine with its medley of fruit character – red currants to blueberries, silky, with velvety tannins, nice concentration and weight. Delish!
