Episode 34

We feature a fabulous premium Prosecco from Andrea da Ponte. The signature Italian spirit, Grappa and an Italian wine producer Cantina Scacciadiavoli. This wine from the region of Umbria with a devilish story and great wines.
Plus a Michelin starred Italian Chef, with a spectacular restaurant in the historic, culturally rich gastronomic capital of Rome.

To get things started we are going to kick off the show with a little bubbly.

This is no ordinary bubbly, this Prosecco from Veneto of course, hails from the DOCG region of Conegliano-Valdobbiadene. It is made from the finest premium grapes and is produced by the long established award winning house of Andrea Da Ponte, founded in 1892.

And from there, this dynasty of a company Andrea Da Ponte Distillery, actually started out over 120 years ago as a distillery. Brothers Andrea and Matteo, were so dedicated to the art and science of producing the finest distillate, that they wrote and published the first printed manual ever on the subject. Historical figures, now producing among the finest grappa in the world…Christian to fill us in on the Andrea Da Ponte grappas, what makes them so unique and outstanding!

Recently at our fundraiser for Dancing with Mississauga Stars at Parsons Interiors. Thank-you to Elizabeth Wright owner of  Cottonwood Wine Agency for her support and pouring of premium Don Giovanni Da Ponte Prosecco and Andrea Da Ponte Grappa.

Principessa Gavia, GAVI DOCG by Banfi

So here is my find for today, I was in the mood for something light, fresh, and a little different, strolling through the aisles of our LCBO, and I picked up this Italian white that turned out to be exactly what I was looking for. In fact, I’ve since been back a couple of times to pick up another bottle!

Georgia's Wine Pick

Georgia’s Wine Pick

And so here it is. The Principessa Gavia, GAVI DOCG by Banfi  $19.95

It comes from the DOCG region of Gavi, located in the prominent wine region of Piedmont and is made from the indigenous grape variety Cortese, 100%.
In this particular wine the grapes are sourced from the producers own estate grown grapes.

The wine is the Principessa Gavia Gavi 2014  $19.95
GAVI DOCG producer is BANFI

What did I like about it? It was light and fresh, 12% alcohol, and really inviting. Seductive on the nose, just what I wanted, fruit forward, vibrant, notes of peach, white flowers, hint of pineapple and hint of mineral notes. Very nice… $19.95 in our market

Villa Maria Thornbury Sauvignon Blanc 2014

For me, over these last few gorgeous warm days we enjoyed, I was drawn to my fave once again, because I know in the winter months I tend to move onto other whites a little more. My fave of course is of course Sauvignon Blanc. So this week my wine pick is the Villa Maria Thornbury Sauvignon Blanc 2014 $18.95 (Prod # 734798) From guess where??? Marlborough, New Zealand.

Susanne'sWine Pick

Susanne’s Wine Pick

For this wine the fruit comes from two vineyard areas of Marlborough, the Wairau and Awatere valleys, which sit side by side
This “dream blend” as winemaker Simon Fell calls it derives its richness and weight from the Wairau area while its finesse and minerality come from the cooler Awatere area.

Right on Mr Fell! I really enjoyed this Sauvignon Blanc, it delivered just like you said it would, crisp, lively, zesty and delicious with intense classic citrus, passion fruit and herbal notes, definitely got my taste buds salivating for something delish to munch on with my second, third fourth sips…

Sokol Blosser, A Legacy of Oregon Wines since 1971.

1970 was winding down when our founders, Bill Blosser and Susan Sokol Blosser pulled their ’68 VW Camper up to an abandoned prune orchard some 30 miles southwest of Portland. These moonstruck kids had little farming experience and just a basic knowledge of wine making. What they did have, in abundance, was a passion for growing the Pinot Noir grape and creating world-class wine. Soon after settling on this extraordinary land, they planted their first vines and cinched their place as pioneers in Oregon’s budding wine industry.

Pinot Noir never tasted so good!
