Labor Day. Celebrate with wine suggestions from The Wine Ladies. September 2010

Dear Wine Ladies,

We’ll be lighting up the grill this Labor Day weekend and chilling with the whole family one last time before the leaves take a turn and the cooler nights descend upon us. We’ve got the menu set, Greek salad, grilled veggies including corn on the cob, chicken and barbeque ribs. To the wine, but which one? Mostly white wine drinkers we’d like to serve two whites, and one or two reds. Suggestions please?

How to manoeuvre the War and Peace wine list. Ask The Wine Ladies July 2010

Dear Wine Ladies,

War and Peace wine lists make me nervous. I don’t know where to start and feel totally intimidated. I end up glossing over the pages taking way too much time trying to find something familiar and appropriate. Recently back on the dating scene, any advice on how to navigate such a wine list and order a suitable wine would be greatly appreciated.

Summer wines and the living is easy-Vinho Verde from Portugal anyone?Ask The Wine Ladies June 2010

Dear Wine Ladies,

The recent hot days are turning my attention to changing up what is typically stocked on my wine rack. Can you recommend a few summer wines that would be appropriate to have on hand? Should red wines in general be reserved for the cooler days being too heavy?

Does duty-free Glenfiddich differ from the rest?Ask The Wine Ladies May 2010

Dear Wine Ladies,

Living in Vancouver I often visit Washington State for short holidays and bring back some duty-free. Over the years I have noticed that the duty free scotch whiskey does not taste as good as the regular scotch in the BC liquor stores. The alcohol content of the duty-free scotch is usually slightly higher than the BC bought product; but this can be mostly discounted by adding a little more water to the duty-free product. So doing a taste test of both products side by side, there’s no doubt there is a big difference. One of the brands I am talking about is Glenfiddich. I have asked the manufacturers of these brands about this, but they claim there is no difference. Thanks for your columns: I read them in every issue of 24!

To cork or not to cork.. New Zealand knows!

Why is it that most of the wines from New Zealand all seem to have screw caps, whether white or red? Do the red wines not need the cork closure so they can breathe and age properly?

How to keep an opened bottle of wine fresh? Ask The Wine Ladies March 2010

Dear Wine Ladies,

I noticed your column in 24 a month or two ago and look forward to reading it now every Friday. I’d like to ask, once a bottle of wine is opened, and only half emptied, how long would it keep if re-corked, or had the air pumped out and capped? Is the best place in the fridge, or store at room temperature?

Crumbly Cork

Crumbly cork! No problem! AskThe Wine Ladies March 2010

Dear Wine Ladies,

This may sound like a silly question but I’m truly at odds on the best way to deal with a crumbly cork! Last night, once again, while trying to open a bottle of wine the cork was dry and crumbly. The harder I tried, and the further I drove the cork screw, the more the cork crumbled and then finally ended up in fragments in the bottle. Is there a way to properly extract a crumbly cork?
