Does duty-free Glenfiddich differ from the rest?

Dear Wine Ladies, Living in Vancouver I often visit Washington State for short holidays and bring back some duty-free. Over the years I have noticed that the duty free scotch whiskey does not taste as good as the regular scotch in the BC liquor stores. The alcohol content of the duty-free scotch is usually slightly higher than the BC bought product; but this can be mostly discounted by adding a little more water to the duty-free product. So doing a taste test of both products side by side, there’s no doubt there is a big difference. One of the brands I am talking about is Glenfiddich. I have asked the manufacturers of these brands about this, but they claim there is no difference. Thanks for your columns: I read them in every issue of 24! Robert, Vancouver Dear Robert, Thanks for the great question. Indeed the products should be identical whether they are selling in duty free or at the retail level. If not, the company would be running a serious risk of confidence in the brand and ruin. The company Glenfiddich, has a stellar reputation and we were certain there must be some kind of explanation, which it turns out there is. We approached a Senior Brand Manager for Glenfiddich in Canada, Lindsay Prociw and posed the question. Here is what she had to say “ anything labeled the same in Duty free as on store shelves in Vancouver, should in fact be the same product. Glenfiddich 12 is bottled in Scotland and shipped out to different locations throughout the world with no difference to those shipped to Duty-free and those to Canadian Liquor Board stores” We further learned that the point of differentiation you mention, alcohol content is a true observation. Lindsay went on to explain that Duty Free often has limited edition and exclusive products, which in this case includes a Distillery edition of Glenfiddich. This edition has a slightly higher alcohol content often referred to as “Cask Strength”, hence the appreciable difference in taste of the whiskey.

Swiss Wines Rock The Big Apple

Swiss Wines Rock The Big Apple

Swiss Wines Rock The Big Apple. The Wine Ladies TV.

May 2nd, 2010: City Winery, New York, New York: The secret is finally out! Swiss wines really rock!

The Swiss are known for their cheese, chocolate, watches and banking but their wines have remained more of a secret with approximately only 2% of Swiss wines ever leaving the country. Chandra Kurt wine consultant, writer and author of Switzerland, said, “it was time to let the secret out, that Swiss wines are amazing and that it was time to let the world know about it.” We were invited to New York City to witness a remarkable and historical wine adventure, “Swiss Wines In The City”.

Invited by Chandra, we brought The Wine Ladies TV show to the heart of Manhattan to the City Winery

Michael Dorf of City Winery, New York, New York.

Michael Dorf of City Winery, New York, New York.

City Winery is the only urban winery in New York City combining proprietor’s Michael Dorf’s passions of food, wine and music into a unique and exciting venue. Michael said, “For a long time I’d been enjoying wine as a fan-drinking it, taking classes, attending wine dinners-but it was not until I actually started participating in the process of working with the grape, turning it into wine, putting it into a bottle, and watching it develop over time, that I really started to understand wine. And when I would give my friends a bottle of wine with my name on it, most would respond by saying: ‘I wanna do that too!”

Just over a year ago two barrels ( Petite Arvine Cru des Domaines 2007 and Cava, Syrah Du Valais, 2008) of Switzerland’s finest wines from the Valais wine growing region, from two different wine producers Provins-Valais and Jean Rene Germanier.

These wines were shipped over a year ago and were patiently waiting for their bottling here in the big apple at the City Winery.
Now we knew this was a very special moment because only 2% of Swiss wines ever leave the country. So the secret is finally out, because as we discovered Swiss wines are wonderful and very special.
