Malbec World Day just around the corner, April 17th, 2015.  So I decided to go with the Malbec, one of my faves. I truly enjoy this varietal especially when it delivers like this one.

Fabre Montmayou Gran Reserva

LCBO Vintages 279802 – $22.95 per bottle

The producer is Fabre Montmayou Winery & Vineyards, the wine, Fabre Montmayou Gran Reserva Malbec 2011, sells here on our market for $22.95. Well worth every penny and more!

The grapes come from vines that over 60 years old, in the region of  Vistalba.

Talk about attention to detail, first it is all manual harvested, in small trays, not to damage the grapes, then the grapes are selected by bunches first, and then again grape by grape.

The wine is aged in French oak barrels for 12 months, the fining is done with fresh egg whites and then aged another 12 months in the bottle before release.

This is an elegant, complex wine with juicy notes of blackberries and cherries on the nose and that hint of violet and liquorish typical of great Malbec, and the tannins are soft, the wine is just yummy!

First of all Riesling is synonymous with Germany, the noble grape varietal that can be made in such a variety of styles from bone dry to beerenhauslese levels where the sweetness is only matched by the beautiful acidity which also lends itself to terrific aging as well.

This Riesling is medium-dry, very light in alcohol, only 7.5% but big big on flavor and finesse! On the nose a seductive aroma of apple and peach, with that hint of petrol that I love in Rieslings with a floral note, beautiful and on the palate rich ripe fruit with racy acidity, love it.

Produced by Weinguter Wegeler making wines since 1882 now in its 4th generation.

My wine pick this week was discovered at a fabulous Italian restaurant in the heart of Yorkville. In the mood for something off the beaten track… not that I am a member of the ABC Club….”anything but Chardonnay”. I love Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blancs, two staples, but when we saw this wine on the list we thought, this is a great producer located in Piedmont. The vineyards have a long history located in the commune of La Mora, in fact the earliest beginnings date back to 1340!

Cordero di Montezemolo, Arneis 2013

Under the same name until 1941 when the countess passed and willed the property to her grandson who is the father of the current owner Giovanni Codero di Montezolo, who together with his children continue to personally manage the vineyards and take care of the fruit. And a superb they do!

To the wine! The Cordero di Montezemolo, Arneis 2013 from the region of Langhe in Piedemonte has an intense bouquet of peach and flowers, so inviting with a crisp, dry long finish. Absolutely delicious and a  different variety to enjoy for a change, well made, complex. Try it, you will love it! I know I did!

This week’s wine pick I discovered while at the bar waiting to be seated for dinner.

A delicious white wine, something off the beaten track. Surprise.The glass placed before me… as I swirled, notes of peach, and touches of lemon and mango… so seductive, then when I tasted, nicely crisp, delish with apple, lemon and a hint of yellow plum, mouth filling and simply yummy. Went great with my thin crust white pizza with wild bison sausage

My great find is from the producer Di Berardino, the 2013 Pecorino.

Pecorino is also the name of the grape. From the region of Abruzzo Italy, situated on the Adriatic coast, Price point $24.00 local here in Ontario. And by the way 100% organic!

Perpetua Chardonnay

Bring on the Okanagan wines please! Ask The Wine Ladies.

Perpetua Chardonnay

Dear Wine Ladies,

I am a fairly recent transplant from the west coast via a brief stint in Calgary and Saskatoon. And I am dismayed by the lack of Okanagan wines found here on the shelves and across Canada. I recently discovered a stunner of a Chardonnay. Although a little pricey, well worth it from what was in the bottle to the exquisite and innovative packaging. It was called Perpetual. The wine was luscious and creamy with an aroma of lemon, absolutely delicious. With the fall coming, I am wondering if this company makes any equally impressive red wines, and if so how would I go about finding them.

Derek

Dear Derek,

We too were impressed with the Perpetual Chardonnay. You are referring to which is one of the Legacy Series wines produced by Mission Hill Family Estate Winery. Indeed delicious! This is a single vineyard Chardonnay from Osoyoos that premiered with the 2006 vintage.

The Legacy Series represents Mission Hill’s top tier wines, a blend of art and science, with the fruit being sourced from specific blocks within select vineyards via GIS mapping, weather stations within the vineyards monitoring climactic conditions, and winemaker John Simes practicing his personal art of winemaking . The wines have received multiple awards and recognition from wine writers and experts both at home and internationally.

Mission Hill produces two Legacy Series red wines, with “Oculus” their Bordeaux- inspired signature wine being the first, and Quatrain, a blend of four grape varieties, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon being the second. Quatrain, by the way means a poem or a stanza that is always composed of four lines. Both of these red wines, admittedly pricey, particularly Oculus at $70.00, are also well worth the top dollar they fetch. Visit Mission Hill  ordering in Ontario.
