Located at the Queens Quay LCBO parking lot the BBQ was a huge success with $130,000 been raised for the camp that day.“Many of these children, inner city kids, suffering with this awful illness, have never had the opportunity to enjoy a canoe ride or campfire,” said Paul LaRose, former LCBO Queen Quay store manager,” now they can feel like a kid and just have an amazing time.” “It’s hard to stay away and I want to still be part of it all.” This wonderful day was all made possible by the generous donations from many LCBO suppliers including food, beverage, alcohol purveyors.“With this donation, the LCBO and its suppliers will have raised more than $1 million for the Camp over the last 19 years, indicated Chris Layton Spokesperson LCBO. “We have come a long way with the 1st BBQ just raising $500 those many years ago,” he indicated. It was an awesome day with amazing food, many fundraising activities included skill-testing games, a huge silent auction tent and more. Way to go everyone! Toronto June 4th, 2010: It’s not about drinking more, it’s about drinking better, announced Dimi Lezinska, Grey Goose Global Ambassador. Grey Goose www.greygoose.com vodka is considered the world’s favourite luxury vodka. Made in Cognac, France it is often the choice of vodka aficionados, the who’s who and celebrities of the world. Just back from Cannes, France, Dimi was here in Toronto as part of his cross-Canada tour bringing knowledge of this summer’s hottest cocktail trends and tips. We were invited to a private tasting at Celebrity TV Chef Roger Mooking’s Kultura Restaurant www.kulturarestaurant.com Friday afternoon to enjoy Dimi’s latest cocktail creations for the summer made with GREY GOOSE® L’Orange Flavoured Vodka, GREY GOOSE® La Poire Flavoured Vodka, and GREY GOOSE® Vodka. All of these vodkas are available in Ontario at the LCBO ( $46.95 per bottle) A very handsome, tall man and dressed as only the French know how, we were struck by Dimi’s charm, charisma and depth of knowledge. He is a true master of his craft, a “cocktail curator” who specializes in the fine art of mixology. Not surprising, as we later discovered that Dimi is a celebrity in his own right having achieved international recognition as the co-host of the Discovery Channel’s hugely popular “Cocktail Kings,” a guide to some of the best cities in the world and the cocktails to enjoy in their most stylish bars, restaurants and hotels and seen on TV in over 50 countries. We tried a stunning array of elegant, delicious and simple to make at home cocktails for any entertaining occasion.“As The Wine Ladies”, Dimi announced, “I must first make you my GREY GOOSE® Moonlight Martini made of course with red wine.” We were simply delighted that he had created a special cocktail that would combine this prestigious vodka with our usual beverage of choice. We were not disappointed, as the appearance, taste and aroma of this cocktail tantalized our various senses to create an unforgettable experience. We agreed with Dimi as he announced that “any better would be simply unbearable”. A work of art for all the senses, aromatic with the essense of the l’orange deftly floating around the rim of the glass with the berries and the Shiraz offering a hint of spice and dark fruit, brilliantly deep purple laced with a dash of bright red and a taste that defies words. Perfect for an afternoon cocktail, racy and delicious. GREY GOOSE® MOONLIGHT MARTINI 1 Part GREY GOOSE® L’Orange Flavoured Vodka 1 Part freshly pureed blackberries ∏ Part fresh lemon juice 1/3 Part sugar syrup 1 Part Red Wine Fill a cocktail shaker with all ingredients. Add ice and shake vigorously until shaker beads with sweat. Serve in a chilled martini glass and garnish with orange zest. Tip: Try making this cocktail with different wines, including a rich Pinot Noir and Malbec. Next on the list was a drink made with GREY GOOSE® La Poire Flavoured Vodka. Before we even began, he first poured us each an ounce of this vodka and swirled it with ice. The aromas of the pears were simply stunning as Georgia proclaimed, “this is incredible, you don’t even need to drink this but simply enjoy the aroma in the glass all night long!” Bonus…..less calories that way! Then, a cocktail including champagne/sparkling wine. As The Wine Ladies we always say this beverage is never enjoyed nearly enough so to include it in this cocktail was simply a brilliant idea. Susanne announced, “I’m having a Girls Night Out BBQ in June and that this would be simply a fabulous drink to serve my B.F.F’s.” Ok. With a sweep of the hand, Susanne was summoned behind the bar with the master himself to create the GREY GOOSE® LA POIRE GOLDENROD. A light and refreshingly elegant cocktail, served in a flute with what appears to be the signature garnish, the zest of the orange, inspired by Grey Goose founder ______backyard orange tree. Simply delightful, delicate, slightly floral in the nose, with pears and the hint of citrus creating perfect harmony in the glass. GREY GOOSE® LA POIRE GOLDENROD 1 ∏ Parts GREY GOOSE® La Poire Flavoured Vodka π Part premium elderflower syrup (available at St. Lawrence Market in Toronto and other specialty markets across Canada) ∏ Part fresh lemon juice 3 Parts champagne/sparkling wine Add first three ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a chilled champagne glass. Top with champagne and present with an orange twist. Finally last but not least The Odessa Cocktail, inspired by Dimi’s last trip to Cannes was the grand finale of this entertaining and delicious afternoon. GREY GOOSE® ODESSA COCKTAIL 2 Parts GREY GOOSE® L’Orange Flavoured Vodka ∏ Part Martini Rosso 5 parts pink grapefruit juice in a high-ball glass with ice. So taken and inspired was Susanne with Dimi’s talent and charm that she asked him to autograph the GREY GOOSE® La Poire Flavoured Vodka and GREY GOOSE® L’Orange Flavoured Vodka bottles so generously donated for her Girls’ Night Out BBQ. Promising to return in time for the 2010 Toronto Film Festival we have invited Dimi to be on The Wine Ladies TV! For a glimpse of Dimi check this out here. Bientot, until we meet again.

Dear Wine Ladies, The recent hot days are turning my attention to changing up what is typically stocked on my wine rack. Can you recommend a few summer wines that would be appropriate to have on hand? Should red wines in general be reserved for the cooler days being too heavy? Sheila Brampton, Ontario Dear Sheila, When it comes to selecting wines that pair best with hot summer days and evenings here are a couple of considerations. First and foremost, summer entertaining is oftentimes very casual, enjoying friends and family at the cottage, at a barbeque perhaps or simply on the deck enjoying the sunshine. Look for easy drinking, casual wines to echo the situation. Light, crisp white wines, well chilled are always welcome, not too heavy in alcohol or overly oaky. Look to Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio and Rieslings, or perhaps a Vinho Verde from Portugal all of which pair well with typical summer fare that often includes a variety of salads. Roses will be really hot once again this summer, enjoying over the last several years a new appreciation being vinified crisp and dry, with seductive fruity aromas of strawberry, raspberry and a touch of minerality depending on its source. Roses are extremely versatile too matching well with a variety of foods, fulfilling the role of a fuller bodied, more concentrated white or that of a lighter red. Steering away from red wines completely would be missing out, opt for lighter, fruitier reds such as Pinot Noir, Gamay, or a Beaujolais, giving them a touch of a chill in the ice bucket before serving. We do love a great Syrah, a Zinfandel or a Cabernet Franc for our ribs, we have to admit, and finally, another soft spot, sparkling wine. Nothing gets a get together going better than a bottle of bubbly.

Dear Wine Ladies, I am a culinary student, am starting to enjoy a glass of wine accompanying my meals and am starting a project on cooking with alcohol. Why should wine be used in cooking and what does it add to a recipe? Bret Toronto, Ontario Dear Bret, Enjoying food and wine in a pairing or utilizing it in a recipe can definitely add another dimension to the gastronomic experience. Cooking with wine adds extra flavour; it acts like a turbo booster, just as garlic, salt, pepper and even lemon does. It can also add extra body, complexity and texture. Wines with high acidity can serve to tenderize and impart flavour as well. When using wine in your recipes, be mindful of the amount of wine you use, too little can be inconsequential while too much can be overpowering. PS. Dear Wine Ladies, Living in Vancouver I often visit Washington State for short holidays and bring back some duty-free. Over the years I have noticed that the duty free scotch whiskey does not taste as good as the regular scotch in the BC liquor stores. The alcohol content of the duty-free scotch is usually slightly higher than the BC bought product; but this can be mostly discounted by adding a little more water to the duty-free product. So doing a taste test of both products side by side, there’s no doubt there is a big difference. One of the brands I am talking about is Glenfiddich. I have asked the manufacturers of these brands about this, but they claim there is no difference. Thanks for your columns: I read them in every issue of 24! Robert, Vancouver Dear Robert, Thanks for the great question. Indeed the products should be identical whether they are selling in duty free or at the retail level. If not, the company would be running a serious risk of confidence in the brand and ruin. The company Glenfiddich, has a stellar reputation and we were certain there must be some kind of explanation, which it turns out there is. We approached a Senior Brand Manager for Glenfiddich in Canada, Lindsay Prociw and posed the question. Here is what she had to say “ anything labeled the same in Duty free as on store shelves in Vancouver, should in fact be the same product. Glenfiddich 12 is bottled in Scotland and shipped out to different locations throughout the world with no difference to those shipped to Duty-free and those to Canadian Liquor Board stores” We further learned that the point of differentiation you mention, alcohol content is a true observation. Lindsay went on to explain that Duty Free often has limited edition and exclusive products, which in this case includes a Distillery edition of Glenfiddich. This edition has a slightly higher alcohol content often referred to as “Cask Strength”, hence the appreciable difference in taste of the whiskey.
