So we are talking major celebrity guests on this week’s radio show. Dan Aykroyd joining us on the show this week. So continuing along the vein of celebrity, my wine pick is actually a celebrity wine. This celebrity is also a Canadian. An entrepreneur, a business maven, marketing genius, and known for handing out money. Well if the pitch is right that is! The celebrity I am talking about is Arlene Dickinson of Dragon’s Den. Her wine is called Persuasion Dragon Blend 2010. A red of course.  It is a blend of Russian River Valley AVA Cabernet Sauvignon and Chalk Hill AVA Merlot. It is made at the family owned winery Thomas-George Estates of California. Persuasion is deep purple in colour, is full bodied, has soft tannins and is mouth filling rich in ripe fruit flavours, spice and notes of oak. Be sure to decant as the wine is unfiltered and could throw a little sediment.

Viña Errázuriz Concagua Costa Shiraz/Syrah 2012, Georgia’s Wine Pick.

So just recently we had the opportunity to attend the 10th anniversary of “the Berlin Tasting:, a legendary and ground breaking tasting that showcased the wines of Chile like never before, beating out iconic wines such as Chateau Lafite and Chateau Margaux. As a nod to this accomplishment and this event, the founder of which is Eduardo Chadwick of Viña Errazuriz.

I thought I would delve into Errazuriz’s wines, one of their reds… And in the mood these days for Syrah, I thought I’d check out the  Viña Errázuriz Concagua Costa Shiraz/Syrah 2012 and so glad I did!

For $24.95, bright, violet-red in colour, wonderful complexity, comes from a single vineyard. The Manzanar Vineyards not far from the sea. This coastal syrah has a bold fruity, seductive aroma of red cherries and raspberries with hints of black pepper.I love this in my wines, it is juicy with fin tannins and has promise to age. I’d buy half a dozen an enjoy as times goes by. Delish.,

My wine pick this week is the Viña Errazuriz Chardonnay Wild Ferment 2012 from the Casablanca Valley in Chile.

So wild ferment means that the winery or winemaker uses native yeasts. These yeasts end up contributing more complexity to the wine. It was aged “sur lie” for 10 months in Oak barrels… it was seductively intense, complex on the nose, with pineapple and peach notes and a creaminess on the palate, with hunts of toast and nuts… Crisp acidity! I really enjoyed this wine.

Luv luv my wine pick this week… and guess what? Its organic, biodynamic and smashing! From Southbrook Vineyards  in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario the 2012 Triomphe Cabernet Sauvignon, the name Triomphe is derived from the Latin “triomphus” a legendary song of praise to the Greek God of wine Bacchus, and this line is the mainstay of Southbrook producing superior quality wines, delicious and of superb value. Seductive deep dark aromas of black currant and cassis, hints of spice, abundantly fruity and concentrated, medium body with long lingering finish.

So I am super happy to share with everyone my wine pick today… because it has long been a favorite of mine…and to be honest at first I didn’t even realize it was organic, I just knew that I loved it… like a bonus biodynamic!

Georgia's Wine Pick

Georgia’s Wine Pick

From Mendocino, California, my pick is the Bonterra which means “good earth” Chardonnay. Because of Mendocino’s climate, hot, dry summers, rich soils suitable for great diversity of cover crops, olive trees, a variety of poppies and even strands of lavender can be seen among the vineyards, perfect for biodynamic farming… this is reflected in the taste in the glass!

It is a rich wine and buttery and nutty, mouth filling, and with a crisp acidity and aromas and flavours of tropical fruit, lemon, it’s a delectable journey on the palate, and with a long standing finish. Just hits the high note time after time!

Viña Tarapacá Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Well with the season turning a little colder now I was in the mood for something a little thick, warm and luscious.

I love wines from Chile and the Maipo Valley is one of Chile’s most important wine-producing regions, Often described as the “Bordeaux of South America” and rich, fruit-driven Cabernet Sauvignon is undoubtedly its most celebrated wine style.

My wine pick this week is the Viña Tarapacá Cabernet Sauvignon 2012, robust with big fruit, this wine hits the spot for me at just $17.95 in our market. Outstanding.

Cordero Di Montezemolo Arneis 2013

My wine pick this week was discovered at a fabulous Italian restaurant in the heart of Yorkville. In the mood for something off the beaten track… not that I am a member of the ABC Club….”anything but Chardonnay”. I love Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blancs, two staples, but when we saw this wine on the list we thought, this is a great producer located in Piedmont. The vineyards have a long history located in the commune of La Mora, in fact the earliest beginnings date back to 1340!

Under the same name until 1941 when the countess passed and willed the property to her grandson who is the father of the current owner Giovanni Codero di Montezolo, who together with his children continue to personally manage the vineyards and take care of the fruit. And a superb they do!

To the wine! The Cordero di Montezemolo, Arneis 2013 from the region of Langhe in Piedemonte has an intense bouquet of peach and flowers, so inviting with a crisp, dry long finish. Absolutely delicious and a  different variety to enjoy for a change, well made, complex. Try it, you will love it! I know I did!

…that is chocolate!

The 4th Annual Luxury Chocolate Show Toronto is coming up, its incredible. Always an extravaganza and celebration of  this delectable treat… with fine chocolate samplings, incredible vendors, demos and of course the Chocolate and Wine Salon, hosted by The Wine Ladies featuring local and international wines and a selection of spirits too.
On this show we learn a little about the history, and the allure of this magical cocoa plant, how its grown, how its made, best enjoyed, with which wines, and  learn a little about its many health benefits as well from the Doctor in the house!
So starting off… Joining us Joey Cee, the founder of Luxury Chocolate Show, as well as the Toronto Chocolate Festival started in 2005, as a 10 day and now expanded to a 23 day event…. he is a formidable force in so many ways, multidimensional beyond belief…in entertainment, music, magazine publishing, creator of various other festivals, Joey Cee at the top of the show

Next up we’ll be talking wine and chocolate pairings, AND sweet and savoury Chocolate dinners!

Sommelier Rebecca Meir-Liebman and her husband Chef Eyal Liebman, founders of L is for…., offering exquisite private dining experiences and Chocolate Dinners, we’ll chat with this dynamic, hugely talented  duo about a very special Wine and Chocolate dinner happening Nov 8th, and we will be there, can’t wait!

Also a very special feature of the show is the Chocolate and Wine Salon that we’re going to be hosting… one of the wineries who will be pouring that day is one of our faves, we love Lynn and Dan Sullivan, the owners of Rosehall Run… from the wine region of Prince Edward County, a beautiful quaint region, a culinary hot-spot with amazing wines, and we’ll be chatting with Lynn in just a bit

My wine pick this week is from Rosehall Run located in one of Ontario’s newest VQA regions, Prince Edward County. The county is situated just under 2 hours east of Toronto. Both Georgia and I have been hosted several times by Lynn and Dan Sullivan the proprietors and winemakers at the winery including when we did a photo shoot for Pie Magazine a year or so ago that involved a rusty old tractor and sparkly gowns!

PEC’s area soil’s have a stark resemblance to France’s Burgundy Region, where Chardonnay are world renowned. Chardonnay reigns supreme in the county too and my pick the ROSEHALL RUN JCR Chardonnay 2011,is a testament to that having recently won the prestigious 2014 International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC): SILVER OUTSTANDING  Award.

This Chardonnay enticed me with its fruity aromas of golden delicious apple, and yellow pear. The 2011 cool summer helped hold the great aromatics and crispness that makes County Chardonnay so appealing. I love it. Delicious paired with a creamy BRIE or milk chocolate.  Available through the winery, many fine restaurants in Toronto and the LCBO. $29.95 in our market.
