I really liked this wine, I liked it more each time I had it, and shared it with a few of my friends and they really liked it too!

So what was it? Well a Tempranillo, the grape, most associated with Spain, best known as the chief grape of red Rioja, Spain’s most famous wine, but in this case it came from Argentina!

Zuccardi Q Tempranillo 2011 in our Vintages locally, sells for $19.95

Distributed through Dionynsus Wine & Spirits

It was full bodied, very smooth, juicy with seductive notes of leather, chocolate and slight nuance of tobacco.

Very delicious. The grapes are sourced by the way from select old vines on their Santa Rosa estate in Mendoza, drink now, or if you can wait, lay down for a few years. Really delish!

I am going through a nuts for New Zealand phase, having discovered a few great finds lately and so here is one of my latest. And NO it’s not a Sauvignon Blanc, although  a white wine. It is the 3rd most popular white varietal in New Zealand and mimics very much the style that you might find in Alsace.

Tiki Wine and Vineyards was founded by Royce and Sue McKean and the name Tiki pays homage to Royce’s great great grandfather, Tiki

Terre Mihi, Chieftain of the Nagati Uenuku tribe.

So I am happy to share with everyone my wine pick today. It has been a favourite of mine and to be honest at first I didn’t even realize it was organic. I just knew I loved it! A bonus biodynamic!

From Mendocino, California, my pick is Bonterra which means “good earth” Chardonnay.

Because of Mendocino’s climate and the hot,dry summers a great diversity of cover crops are part of the landscape. The olive trees, a variety of poppies and even strands of lavender can be seen among the vineyards. Perfect for biodynamic farming. This is reflected in the taste in the glass!

It is a rich wine, buttery and nutty, mouth filling and with a crisp acidity and aromas and aromas and flavours of tropical fruit, lemon. It is a delectable journey on the palate and with a long standing finish. Just hits the high note time after time!

So this past week we were celebrating my other sister Barb’s birthday. I was looking for something super special to serve at our family celebration. My sister is extraordinary and so she deserved a wine that is extraordinary made by an extraordinary winemaker, Laurie Hook.

Extraordinary women of wine. Laurie has headed up the wine making team at Beringer for the past 13 years. Beringer is one of the first wineries in Napa Valley, dating back to 1875. My wine pick is the Beringer Knights Vally Cabernet Sauvignon 2011.

Full bodied, seductive nose of ripe blue and black berry, full intense fruit flavor, good acidity and lasting finish… hmm hmm good!

MARCH 1, 2018

Once again Casillero del Diablo was highlighted internationally, this time by the prestigious English consultancy Wine Intelligence, being recognized as the second most powerful wine brand in the world. Wine Intelligence developed its first Global Wine Branding Index, in which 16,000 wine consumers from the 15 most important countries in the industry were interviewed, representing more than 380 million consumers.

This ranking is based on the connection brands have with consumers. Six measurement methods were used, among which “brand awareness”, “remembered purchase in the last three months”, “measurement of brand connection related to affinity and recommendation of the product”, among other aspects.

In the breakdown by country, the Chilean wine brand led the ranking in markets such as Brazil, Chile and Ireland and ranked among the Top 5 in China, the United Kingdom, South Korea and Sweden. The ranking was headed by the Australian brand Yellow Tail, while Casillero del Diablo was positioned in second place, over recognized international brands such as Gallo, Jacob’s Creek, among others.

So we’ve been talking a lot between us about Portugal lately. We are ossibly planning a visit there in the new year. While strolling the aisles of our local LCBO I come upon a new release from Portugal,  the Douro region actually. Exactly where we will be going, so I thought why not give it a try? So I did, and I liked it a lot. It is the Prazo de Roriz Tinto 2011.

Georgia's Wine Pick

This red wine is a blend which includes about 25% I believe it was of the most well known red grapes of Portugal Touring Nacional. It also has  the Tinta Roriz varietal, called Tempranillo in Spain, in it too.The wine has a deep purple red colour, its fresh and vibrant, with rich ripe dark fruit, like black cherry and plum, hint of vanilla, chocolate and spice, mouth filling with a good finish.

Woohoo $19.95… Portugal here we come!!

A friend brought this wine over as a gift for a recent Christmas dinner party. Loved the name of this wine, it kind of goes with the holidays. But there is nothing scroogie about this wine! This awesome Shiraz comes from South Australia and from the Ebenezer vineyard, which was first planted in the 1850’s.

Barossa Valley Estate Ebenezer Shiraz 2008

It delivers a big beautiful package all wrapped up with a full body, it’s rich, with ripe fruit intense aromas of blackberries, blueberries, hint of chocolate, long finish, lots of layers and depth. Good long finish and a bit of a treat…. But it’s the holidays, in our market $39.95.
