Cheers, to happiness and great health, particularly HEART health, Which brings us to the focus of this week’s show. Coming up on February 17th, we will be hosting our “Open Up Your Heart” Wine Tasting Dinner, fundraiser in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation. It’s going to be a fabulous evening featuring 3 incredible winemakers, all there to present their wines and pair with the food, wonderful wines of course, to enjoy, a jazz trio and much more. It is a cause that we hold dear to our hearts as our Mum passed away in October of 2009 due to stroke and it is our goal to sell as many ticket as we can!

Joining us this week, one of the esteemed winemakers who will be presenting at the event, Dianne Smith, from Green Lane Estate Winery, Niagara’s newest winery. Dianne is committed to putting Green Lane on the map, with her passion for creating wines through biodynamic practices, producing wines with unique flavour profiles. Also with us, Executive Chef Extraordinaire! from the beautifully appointed Cucci Ristorante in Oakville, Gordon Goss. Both Diane and Gordon have brought along a few samples as well as their unique passions and talents for their selected crafts

Dianne Smith, winemaker from GreenLane Winery, the newest kid on the block in the Niagara region. With a passion for producing wines through biodynamic and organic practices, Dianne is committed to putting GreenLane on the map in Niagara by creating more environmentally sustainable vineyard practices resulting in the production of unique flavour profile wines for GreenLane Estate Winery.

Some Important Facts about Heart and Stroke

* Heart disease and stroke is responsible for one out of three deaths per year
* Every 7 minutes, someone dies from heart disease or stroke
* Every 10 minutes, someone dies or is disabled by stroke, and if we can’t support further research and reduce prevalence, in 10 years this could be every five minutes
* Heart disease and stroke are extremely serious, complex and frequently fatal diseases
* Survivors often require the most advanced care available
* Heart disease and stroke have a greater impact on Canadians’ health than all other diseases combined – including cancer
* Almost 1 in 5 Canadians over the age of 65 are living with some form of heart disease of stroke
* 300,000 people in Canada are living with the effects of stroke and this number is predicted to increase significantly with our aging population
* Heart disease and stroke costs the Canadian economy over $22.2 billion a year including direct healthcare costs, as well as indirect economic costs related to disability and death
* The rates are on the decline and has been since 1951 though the amount of cases are going up because we have a larger population and people who are living longer.
