So my wine pick came to me via a blind tasting over the Easter holidays. Our sister Barb brought it,as she always likes to surprise and test us… which is always fun.I truly loved this wine and we actually thought it would be around the $40.00 mark, but sells for just $19.95 in our market, a stellar wine for this price.
It comes from south eastern Spain as well, only from the DO Alicante. The varietal is “Monastrell” or more commonly known as mourvedre. The grapes are harvested by hand from small plots of old vines. It is simply Yummy!…It is deep garnet, purplish in colour, has a seductive bouquet of dark cherries and blackberry, plus a splash of leather. On the palate, full bodied, (15%) rich, with notes of licorice, more blackberry, and a long finish.
The wine is the Tarima Hill Estate Bottled Old Vines 2011.
This week's episode....Episode #20 (WL-04-12-2015)
Celebrate Cinco de Mayo May 5th,2015
With Malbec World Day just around the corner, April 17th, 2015, I decided to go with the Malbec, one of my faves. I truly enjoy this varietal especially when it delivers like this one.
The grapes come from vines that over 60 years old, in the region of Vistalba.
Talk about attention to detail, first it is all manual harvested, in small trays, not to damage the grapes, then the grapes are selected by bunches first, and then again grape by grape.
The wine is aged in French oak barrels for 12 months, the fining is done with fresh egg whites and then aged another 12 months in the bottle before release.
This is an elegant, complex wine with juicy notes of blackberries and cherries on the nose and that hint of violet and liquorish typical of great Malbec, and the tannins are soft, the wine is just yummy!
On our recent trip to Las Vegas we discovered our latest Fabulous Finds For Foodies. The restaurant is Aureole, located in the Mandalay Bay Casino and Resort. It is part of the incredible Charlie Palmer Group, a two time Michelin Star recipient and Wine Spectator Grand Award winner for its wine list every year since 1999!
One of my favorite courses is dessert.I was not disappointed when much to my delight an incredible orange cream semifreddo flambe was paired with something from back home. So a nod to Aureole Wine Director Harley Carbery for adding this Icewine to the list! The Jackson-Triggs Reserve Vidal Icewine 2012 is my wine pick today!
As always, so luscious with seductive aromas of tropical fruits, mango, apricot and papaya. Rich on the palate with that wonderful acidity to balance this delectable wine, we sure know how to make our signature wine here in Niagara and Jackson Triggs, Canada's most awarded winery does it fabuloso!
