Georgia's Wine Picks

So my wine pick also hails from California, and I know you would love this wine too. I’m going with a Pinot Noir today that really delivers big and at a great price point. $18.90 in our market. And finding inexpensive Pinot noir is not that easy, this elusive grape that it is, so I am happy!

So from a family owned winery based in the Salinas Valley, Monterey County, this Pinot Noir is very enticing with an aroma of strawberries, hints of plum and spice, and full rich flavor with berries and cherries a hint of oak and spice. And to add to your Earth Day this winery was the first in Monterey to be certified SIP or Sustainable in Practice. My wine pick is the Hahn Winery Pinot Noir 2013. This will definitely be a standard go to Pinot for me.

A taste of Italy...Amarone,Grappa and Italian cuisine.

So my wine pick came to me via a blind tasting over the Easter holidays. Our sister Barb brought it,as she always likes to surprise and test us… which is always fun.I truly loved this wine and we actually thought it would be around the $40.00 mark, but sells for just $19.95 in our market, a stellar wine for this price.

It comes from south eastern Spain as well, only from the DO Alicante. The varietal is “Monastrell” or more commonly known as mourvedre. The grapes are harvested by hand from small plots of old vines. It is simply Yummy!…It is deep garnet, purplish in colour, has a seductive bouquet of dark cherries and blackberry, plus a splash of leather. On the palate, full bodied, (15%) rich, with notes of licorice, more blackberry, and a long finish.

The wine is the Tarima Hill Estate Bottled Old Vines 2011.

Available in our market $19.95 per bottle

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo May 5th,2015

With Malbec World Day just around the corner, April 17th, 2015, I decided to go with the Malbec, one of my faves. I truly enjoy this varietal especially when it delivers like this one.

LCBO Vintages 279802 - $22.95 per bottle

The producer is Fabre Montmayou Winery & Vineyards, the wine, Fabre Montmayou Gran Reserva Malbec 2011, sells here on our market for $22.95. Well worth every penny and more!

The grapes come from vines that over 60 years old, in the region of  Vistalba.

Talk about attention to detail, first it is all manual harvested, in small trays, not to damage the grapes, then the grapes are selected by bunches first, and then again grape by grape.

The wine is aged in French oak barrels for 12 months, the fining is done with fresh egg whites and then aged another 12 months in the bottle before release.

This is an elegant, complex wine with juicy notes of blackberries and cherries on the nose and that hint of violet and liquorish typical of great Malbec, and the tannins are soft, the wine is just yummy!

Episode #19 (WL 03-30-2015) Grape stomping mad about Malbec and Malbec World Day, April 17th, 2015

On our recent trip to Las Vegas we discovered our latest Fabulous Finds For Foodies. The restaurant is Aureole, located in the Mandalay Bay Casino and Resort. It is part of the incredible Charlie Palmer Group, a two time Michelin Star recipient and Wine Spectator Grand Award winner for its wine list every year since 1999!

One of my favorite courses is dessert.I was not disappointed when much to my delight an incredible orange cream semifreddo flambe was paired with something from back home. So a nod to Aureole Wine Director Harley Carbery for adding this Icewine to the list! The Jackson-Triggs Reserve Vidal Icewine 2012 is my wine pick today!

As always, so luscious with seductive aromas of tropical fruits, mango, apricot and papaya. Rich on the palate with that wonderful acidity to balance this delectable wine, we sure know how to make our signature wine here in Niagara and Jackson Triggs, Canada's most awarded winery does it fabuloso!

Available at the winery.

$39.95 per bottle

There is no doubt that an event as big as the Oscars definitely calls for a wonderful glass of bubbly … but not everyones pocket book is so rich, so I have found a terrific sparkling wine, big on flavour and a steal of a deal! This is the perfect sparkling wine to enjoy during the Academy Awards, first of all it is a winner in its own right, one of the most popular brands to hit our LCBO market, these wines are well made, delicious and have fun and flirty dresses on the labels, perfect for the red carpet celebrations. The wines are Girls' Night Out and my wine pick is the Girls’ Night Out Sparkling. This bubbly is 100% Riesling, has notes of green apple and citrus on the nose, is off dry is crisp and lively, with pear and tropical notes on the palate. It is the ideal partner for a variety of foods, from rich and fatty to salty including one of my all time favourites the potato chip. Thank you bubbles for cleansing our palates after every sip and readying them our next culinary bites!
