Georgia's Wine Picks

On our recent trip to Las Vegas we discovered our latest Fabulous Finds For Foodies. The restaurant is Aureole, located in the Mandalay Bay Casino and Resort. It is part of the incredible Charlie Palmer Group, a two time Michelin Star recipient and Wine Spectator Grand Award winner for its wine list every year since 1999!

One of my favorite courses is dessert.I was not disappointed when much to my delight an incredible orange cream semifreddo flambe was paired with something from back home. So a nod to Aureole Wine Director Harley Carbery for adding this Icewine to the list! The Jackson-Triggs Reserve Vidal Icewine 2012 is my wine pick today!

As always, so luscious with seductive aromas of tropical fruits, mango, apricot and papaya. Rich on the palate with that wonderful acidity to balance this delectable wine, we sure know how to make our signature wine here in Niagara and Jackson Triggs, Canada's most awarded winery does it fabuloso!

Available at the winery.

$39.95 per bottle

Episode #18 (WL 03-22-2015) Welcome to fabulous Las Vegas... wine and dine scene extraordinaire! Our Fabulous Finds For Foodies... Aureole Las Vegas by Charlie Palmer, Mandalay Bay.

There is no doubt that an event as big as the Oscars definitely calls for a wonderful glass of bubbly … but not everyones pocket book is so rich, so I have found a terrific sparkling wine, big on flavour and a steal of a deal! This is the perfect sparkling wine to enjoy during the Academy Awards, first of all it is a winner in its own right, one of the most popular brands to hit our LCBO market, these wines are well made, delicious and have fun and flirty dresses on the labels, perfect for the red carpet celebrations. The wines are Girls' Night Out and my wine pick is the Girls’ Night Out Sparkling. This bubbly is 100% Riesling, has notes of green apple and citrus on the nose, is off dry is crisp and lively, with pear and tropical notes on the palate. It is the ideal partner for a variety of foods, from rich and fatty to salty including one of my all time favourites the potato chip. Thank you bubbles for cleansing our palates after every sip and readying them our next culinary bites!

So the new year is upon us and it might be a time for some us to do a little budgeting. We  may have stretched ourselves a little bit. But not to worry, no need to put away the wine glass or cut back on a good glass of wine… we’ve got delish budget wines to the rescue!

So for me, we had a lot of folks over at my place during the holidays, 14,15 people for dinner for quite a few nights… so I found myself a great deal, that everybody loved… and when I unveiled it and told them the price… their jaws dropped!

My find from Vinas Santa Rita… the Santa Rita Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2011, from the Maipo Valley in Chile… $13.95. We actually stayed at this incredible property at the Casa Real hotel, hundreds of acres of stunning vegetation, hundred year old trees, just beautiful! The winery founded in 1880 produces amazing wines of terrific value!

This Cab a blend of the best Cabernet Sauvignon barrels in the vintage, aged in French and American oak… concentrated rich flavours, hints of spice, of oak and with soft tannins… big juicy berry flavor Go and get yourself a bottle, delish for $13.95 in our market.

Episode #16 (WL 01-12-2015) Icewine... Canada's Nectar of the Gods!

First of all Riesling is synonymous with Germany, the noble grape varietal that can be made in such a variety of styles from bone dry to beerenhauslese levels where the sweetness is only matched by the beautiful acidity which also lends itself to terrific aging as well.

This Riesling is medium-dry, very light in alcohol, only 7.5% but big big on flavor and finesse! On the nose a seductive aroma of apple and peach, with that hint of petrol that I love in Rieslings with a floral note, beautiful and on the palate rich ripe fruit with racy acidity, love it.

Produced by Weinguter Wegeler making wines since 1882 now in its 4th generation.

So we are talking major celebrity guests on this week's radio show with iconic Dan Aykroyd joining us on the show this week. So continuing along the vein of celebrity, my wine pick is actually a celebrity wine. This celebrity is also a Canadian, an entrepreneur, a business maven, marketing genius, and known for handing out money… well if the pitch is right that is! The celebrity I am talking about is Arlene Dickinson of Dragon's Den and her wine is called Persuasion Dragon Blend…2010, a red of course… it is a blend of Russian River Valley AVA Cabernet Sauvignon and Chalk Hill AVA Merlot , it is made at the family owned winery Thomas-George Estates of California. Persuasion is deep purple in colour, is full bodied, has soft tannins and is mouth filling rich in ripe fruit flavours, spice and notes of oak. Be sure to decant as the wine is unfiltered and could throw a little sediment.
