Our next guest here to share the story, of a man who not only created celebrity for himself and his winery, he also created celebrity for the whole wine region of Napa Valley, and actually of California.
We are talking about a great new world wine pioneer, an international icon, the late Robert Mondavi, founder of the Robert Mondavi Winery, co-founder with Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Opus One of course, a great patron of the arts, and so much more.
1966 The Winery's first harvest is celebrated with the first Blessing of the Grapes.
1970 Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi meet for the first time in Hawaii. The Baron suggests the idea of a joint venture, which later becomes Opus One.The photo here is from a later time when the Baron visited Robert Mondavi Winery in Napa.
Here to share the Mondavi story, and share a few of his own, he is a celebrity in his own right, bearing the title of the most prestigious title in the world of wine, that is a MW, or a Master of Wine, such an elite group, one of only 38 residing in all of the US. Lots to cover today we welcome Mark de Vere, Director of Wine Education for the Constellation Academy of Wine.
After Robert's success in Napa Valley, he returned to his boyhood home in Lodi and founded Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi.... everyday wine.
Robert's foresight of planting vineyards throughout Northern California resulted in the Robert Mondavi Private Selection.
The late Robert Mondavi is considered the godfather of the California wine movement. This classic cab with cassis, blackberry and cedar notes has been made since the winery's founding in 166. Enjoy it with hearty dishes, meats, lasagna or filet mignon.

What fun meeting Sam Reid producer and member of this esteemed rock band GLASS TIGER who along with talented ,musician Dave Lawler own and operate SLIP ONE Digital www.slipone.com the GTA's newest fully integrated audio/visual surround sound studio. Both just recently returned from Afghanistan as part of a ‘Team Canada’ program that sees Canadian entertainers and former NHL hockey players provide a positive morale boost to the soldiers serving there. Both shared their experiences with host Bill Perrie on the show, “Our mission was to lift the soldiers’ spirits for even a few brief moments, to show them Canada still cares, and to learn firsthand about what they are trying to accomplish in Afghanistan,” said Sam Reid.
Host Bill Perrie of The Pub Show welcomed us graciously offering up a “cold one’, a glass of Japanese beer.... SAPPORO.... It’s Japanese for sharing. Not our usual beverage of choice, it was a lovely departure for our standard drinking beverage. We don’t think we need to tell you what that might be! SAPPORO is made by Japan’s only beer producing company and we really enjoyed it. Albert Pub in Prince Albert. It was great to see that Ian offers not just a choice of red or white in his pub but a nice tidy selection of wine for his patrons that prefer the beverage of the grape, Well done Ian! We brought a bottle of Girls Night Out Chardonnay to share with the group. It was an awesome afternoon with interesting people, delicious beer and great fun.Read more: The Wine Ladies enjoy a GLASS TIGER “cold one” on The Pub Radio Show
After 3 long years of searching Jak Meyer finally found the perfect vineyard site in the Okanagan Valley. In 2006 he and his wife Janice bought a small 1.62 hectare vineyard on the coveted Naramata bench, and in 2009 a 6.9 hectare property in Okanagan Falls. The Meyer's focus is Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, producing less than 3000 cases from mature 14 year old vines.
