Considering such an ancient wine region has only recently been introduced to this delicious, versatile and ever popular grape, Syrah or Shiraz it has taken exceptionally well to the “terroir” of the island and making quite an impression.
Sicily, definitely on the radar of many a wine critic, is being recognized for the teriffic value this sun-drenched island’s wines have to offer. And Syrah is definitely one of them...Here in Sicily this grape typically expresses itself with a little softness and considerable spice. Obviously a style that is hitting the mark with many a palate confirmed by the high demand for the wine by international markets.
Case in point, the Casa Planeta Syrah IGT has a beautiful deep ruby colour, is medium bodied and offers up lush flavours of plum, blackberries and cherries with hints of pepper and herbs. It is easy drinking and a wonderful partner for a wide range of foods, whether a chunk of hard cheese, a pasta or a meat dish.

The island of Sicily offers up a terroir-trifecta for the grapevine! Hilly and mountaneous with loads of sun and little rain Sicily is well positioned to produce excellent vino and that is exactly what it is doing and for incredible value. With a history of wine culture that dates back to the eighth century B.C. this fertile sun-drenched land coupled with its Mediterranean positioning is an oasis for the grapevine.
And now with the modernization of the industry embracing state-of-the-art enology coupled with tradition Sicily has come of age. Whether focusing on the indigenous grape varieties such as Nero d'Avola, Nerello Mascalese and Grillo or the international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Pinot Grigio this island is garnering lots of attention from many wine lovers and critics alike.
Pinot Grigio, one of the most popular white wines today is typically a crowd pleaser, fresh and crisp with inviting aromas that include apple, pear and melon, sometimes with floral, and sometimes mineral notes too. Sicily's Montalto's Pinot Grigio offers up great fruit on the nose including apple and melon.... there is a touch of minerality too with a finish that stays for the final act!
Montalto's Nero D'avola Cabernet Sauvignon also showcases the quality and expression of the terroir of Sicily.
The colour is deep red in colour, the aroma and the flavour seduces with dark fruit and spice. It is medium bodied with a once again a long finish that satisfies and beckons another sip, and another....

Vino from Veneto...Valpolicella Ripasso rewards the palate with bright blackberry fruit, notes of vanilla and black liquorice... Delicious! Valpolicella is a wine that comes from the region of Veneto, located in the north-east of Italy, home of the “big gun” Amarone and of Romeo and Juliet! When a Valpolicella is classified as a Classico and done in the ripasso method, the wine reaches new heights in flavour, texture, body and aromatics! The designation of “classico” requires the grapes to come from the original Valpolicella production zone which was later adjusted in 1968. The great majority of grapes used are the same as for Amarone, the corvina, molinara and rondinella varietals although small percentages of a few others are permitted.
The methodology of “ripasso” greatly concentrates the bouquet, flavours and texture. How? “Ripasso” literally means “re-passed”. After the fermentation process when producing an Amarone, the unpressed skins of the dried grapes are then used for the production of Valpolicella. These dried grape skins add body, character, complexity and a boost of alcohol strength.
Our Negrar Ripasso Valpolicella Classico is dark ruby red in colour, is seductive in the nose with lush blackberry and black liquorice notes and a hint of mint. Full bodied with a touh of vanilla the texture is rich and with a good finish.
Negrar is a cooperative winery founded in 1933 and located in the Classico area of Valpolicella. With 210 farmers/partners producing typical grapes for Vapolicella on a surface of 530 hectars, they are one of the major producers of Amarone, Valpolicella and Ripasso wines.
